How to Clean & Disinfect Your House After Having The Flu?

Posted in   Cleaning tipsHygiene  on February 27, 2020

cleaning the kitchen after having the flu

We spend a lot of our time at home, especially when we are ill from the flu. The flu is highly contagious, so it’s vital to clean and disinfect your home after you’ve recovered from the illness. There are a few things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu to others who live in the house during your illness and afterwards, such as:

  • Stop touching your face
The flu is spread from person to person through droplets on surfaces or in the air. Touching these contaminated surfaces (unknowingly) can transmit the virus into your body, and by touching your face you are simply increasing the chance of contracting the flu.
  • Throw away tissues
Make sure you have a dedicated bin or plastic bag to dispose of used tissues, and wash all clothing and bedding regularly to wash away any germs. Leaving used tissues around the house not only contaminates more surfaces but also risks infecting other people with the virus.
  • Wash your hands
Washing your hands regularly stops the transportation of germs from one surface to another, and also protects your own health as you travel on public transport and visit busy places.

What cleaning products kill the flu?

To protect yourself from the flu and prevent the spread of germs, certain cleaning products, such as Selden Spray & Wipe, are designed to sanitise as it cleans. This particular spray is easy to use, as you don’t have to dilute the mixture, you simply spray it onto the surface and wipe off with a clean cloth. Another suitable product is Novacross which is a multipurpose disinfectant cleanser commonly used in hospitals. This product complies with BSEN standards to work against MRSA, E.coli, salmonella, listeria and more.

How to protect yourself from the coronavirus (COVID-19)?

The recent coronavirus outbreak has dominated the news, as more and more people quickly become infected and the death toll increases. By practising the same techniques you would employ for avoiding the flu, you can avoid contracting the virus. If you’re living in a busy area such as London, it’s recommended you take these precautions to protect your health and the health of others:

  • Wearing a mask prevents you from touching their face (which is the main way people contract illnesses)
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick or coughing/sneezing
  • Stay at home if you suspect you are sick yourself
  • Wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, or if this isn’t readily available, a hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol will suffice
