Where Should You Store Cleaning Chemicals?

Posted in   Cleaning chemicals  on March 1, 2019

Storing your cleaning chemicals properly is important for your organisation and the people in it. We often forget how toxic and dangerous everyday cleaning chemicals can be if handled incorrectly, and so it is of the utmost importance chemicals are stored away properly for everyone’s safety. What’s more, by storing your cleaning products correctly, you can also ensure they last longer and are readily located. Take a look at our storage guidance below to learn more.

Where should you store cleaning chemicals?

The simplest and safest way to store your cleaning chemicals and supplies is to keep them in their own dedicated cupboard. This storeroom will allow you to keep all your supplies in one place which can be easily organised. Your cleaning storeroom should be kept cool, dry and clean at all times – these conditions are necessary to ensure the safety, stability and longevity of the chemicals.

Your storeroom space should be of a good size so all your supplies aren’t crammed in and hard to find, with a risk of getting knocked, spilled or broken. Keep the room organised with adequate shelving and create an easy to navigate system, for example, frequently used items should be easily accessible near the door and at the front of shelves. You may also want to organise supplies according to jobs – for example, keeping all floor cleaning products together, all bathroom cleaning products together, etc.

Storage tips:

  • Always store cleaning products in their dedicated storeroom after usage – leaving chemicals around can be hazardous and lead to potentially fatal accidents
  • Keep your storeroom organised
  • Colour-coded cloths should have their own area in a store cupboard, making it easy to know which cloth to use for specific tasks
  • If you have many different cleaning chemicals, order them methodically – for example, store apart liquids and solids, flammable and non-flammable, etc
  • Keep flammable substances in a flameproof metal cabinet
  • Try to keep chemicals in their original containers and sealed tight – this should mean instructions for use are readily available and spillages are minimised
  • Don’t stock up on supplies unnecessarily as this can lead to cramped and overcrowded storerooms – janitorial suppliers can deliver what you need, when you need it
  • Inspect products and equipment regularly to ensure they aren’t damaged and are still safe for use
